Spotify Is Listening
Other than experiencing frustration with the navigation experience while using Spotify (specifically in the car), at some point Spotify will be able to hear the frustration in my voice according to a new patent.
We’ve all been aware of the voice listening technologies such as Siri and the constantly eavesdropping Alexa. Spotify having (not using as of yet) audio analyzing technology to improve listening experience comes with questions of ethics and invasion rather than making a user experience better.
There is already a recommendation system implemented within the application. This reinvention of the wheel seeks to provide a more personalized recommendation list by analyzing vocal timbre and environment noise levels. After processing the information, Spotify would be able to tell you more about your personality, mood, gender, age, accent, and music taste better than you can tell yourself.
To cool the concerns of privacy and judgement of ones personality and present state, many companies hold patents to various forms of technology that don’t make it into the market. When granted the patent, Spotify made sure they made that known.
Does that mean that this technology will stay on the shelf for future use? Will we know when it is implemented? Will we have a choice of having our Audio Input be used to curate a music/podcast list that we may or may not feel a connection to? I guess once a “Frustration” playlist shows up in recommendations, I’ll know for sure.
