What The Ethics Going On?

In job searching, one of the factors taken for granted is reviewing companies for their values and ethics before one accepts employment. Being a black lesbian, that factor is of utmost importance.
Lately, a lot of big name tech companies are showing that you might want to rethink the goal of being employed by them. The blatant sweeping of things under a rug has also become insulting.

The issue of ethics, diversity, and inclusion in big tech seems to constantly be a problem with lack of accountability. Study after study, year after year. As a response to this problem, these companies show no shame in using gaslighting tactics and punishing those who speak out. Being on the list of the underrepresented minority groups in tech, this disturbs my level of trust and confidence.
In the excellent article Why Diversity and Representation Matter in the Tech Industry written by Ali Colwell, she speaks of the origins of the gap that plagues this industry in providing a welcoming environment for all. She also lists out the benefits that some companies and organizations gain from being diverse and inclusive. The most important point would have to be that in order for change to happen, these companies have to do more work and not fabricate the facts that clearly show a lack of action.

The time is NOW when it comes to the tech industry reevaluating their role in inclusivity. The time is NOW for us to examine these companies and to be certain that the culture matches our personal ethics. As Ali’s article points out, this being the right thing to do is different than actually doing it.
